Seamless Waterproofing for a Solid Foundation

A water-repellent and a waterproofing membrane are two methods used to make materials resistant to water, but they differ in their application and operation.

A water-repellent, also known as a water-repellent agent, is a chemical that is applied to the surface of a material to repel water. It is often used on porous materials such as stone, concrete, brick or wood. The water-repellent penetrates the pores of the material and forms a hydrophobic barrier that prevents water from penetrating, while allowing the moisture to evaporate. This helps prevent water damage, such as decay, mildew or cracking.

Water repellents generally do not alter the appearance of the treated material, nor do they affect its ability to breathe.

In contrast, a waterproofing membrane is a physical layer or coating applied to a surface to make it watertight. Waterproofing membranes are often used in roofing systems, bathrooms, foundations or basements to prevent water leaks. They are generally made from synthetic materials such as rubber, modified bitumen, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer).

Waterproofing membranes form a continuous barrier that prevents water from passing through the treated surface. They are often used where total waterproofing is required, for example, in areas subject to prolonged exposure to water.

In short, a water-repellent works by penetrating the material and rendering it hydrophobic, while a waterproofing membrane creates a physical barrier that prevents water from penetrating. Water repellents are mainly used to protect porous materials, while waterproofing membranes are used in applications where total waterproofing is required.
